Sonoma State's student-run newspaper, the Sonoma State Star, has just won a General Excellence award from the California News Publishers Association, snagging second place honors in a prestigious journalism competition between all four-year colleges in the state.
The award was for two consecutive issues of The Star that published in Spring 2022 that featured enterprise reporting on campus administration and budget issues. The CNPA judges wrote: “The Star's enterprise reporting and coverage surrounding the college president is commendable. Good use of photos and headlines.” Student editors named in the award include Mary Helen Rowell, Myles Grabau, Emily Cripe, Nick Roth and Rosalee Padilla.
"The CNPA competition is mainly conducted among professional news outlets and has very few campus categories, so winning any General Excellence honors in California is a major accomplishment for our student editors and writers," said Star advisor and journalism instructor Corinne Asturias, adding that this is the second time The Star has won a General Excellence award in the past five years. "Considering we're up against many well-funded and legendary journalism schools in the state, this is a proud achievement indeed." Congratulations to the well-deserving staff of The Star!
