AMCS Professor Patrick Johnson’s latest article, “If It’s Cool: Notes on Slow Jams, Black Masculinity, and the Possibilities of Black Pleasure in Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite” was recently published in Women’s Studies in Communication. The article looks at the continued Black cultural resonance of R&B singer Maxwell’s 1996 debut album Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite and explores how 1990s R&B serves as a generative site for thinking through Black pleasure politics.
