Music Education Program Coordinator Dr. Kim Mieder wrote a chapter for the book Meanings of Music Participate: Scenarios from the United States (Routledge 2022). Dr. Mieder writes about her qualitative research in the chapter titled "Exploring Meaning to Increase Engagement in a fifth Grade General Music Class". This project uncovered elements that were relevant and meaningful to students in a 5th grade general music class, in hopes of providing a path to enhanced enjoyment of music class. Results of this teaching project showed that using a more learner-centered instructional style satisfied students' needs to feel autonomous, socially connected and musically competent.
