Dr. Michaela Grobbel, Professor of German, presented a paper entitled “Overcoming Trauma through Art? A Case Study: Ceija Stojka's Work Remembering the Nazi Genocide of the Romanies” at the International Organization of Social Sciences and Behavioral Research (OISSBR) Conference on March 23, 2023. Because of her research on the Romani artist whom she knew personally, she was invited to participate in the art exhibit opening on May 23 at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York. This exhibit, which has been very favorably received, runs through September 25, 2023, and hosts an extensive survey of Stojka’s work. It is the second exhibit in the USA of this important Romani artist from Austria. Grobbel, together with Dr. Lorely French, Pacific University/Oregon, organized the first US exhibit of Stojka’s work in 2009/10 which was displayed in Oregon, Vermont, and at Sonoma State University.
Dr. Grobbel was invited to contribute to the upcoming catalog accompanying the 2023 New York exhibition, What Should I be Afraid of? Roma Artist Ceija Stojka, which will serve as the first comprehensive documentation of this major exhibit of the artist’s oeuvre in the United States. Hirmer Publishing, headquartered in Munich, Germany, and one of the most prestigious publishers of art books worldwide, will publish this book in the fall.
