Assistant Professor of Theater Arts, Performance, Marie Ramirez Downing spent a lot of her summer working with the CSU Summer Arts program. Marie created and coordinated a CSU Summer Arts course called Latinx Voices on Stage: Community, Lineage and Performance.
Students performed and celebrated Latinx Theatre history and developed contemporary Latinx narratives and original performance work that resulted in a public performance. They trained with Latinx faculty, professional actors, directors, and playwrights from NYC, Chicago, and locally representing diverse backgrounds (Guatemalan, Puerto Rican, Costa Rican, Mexican and Cuban descent). Students learned physical and vocal techniques to embody ancestral and historical imagery of Latinx culture and heritage. There were current SSU students and several alumni that joined the course this summer!
The mission of CSU Summer Arts is to empower people through excellence and innovation in arts education, exhibition, and performance.
